Shannox Strategy Guide Normal (10): To Kill A Huntard

Shannox 10 man Strategy Guide

This Shannox kill guide will try to explain the easiest way we found in our guild Noctus Sero on how to down Shannox.  When we first attempted the fight we were probably actually hurting on gear and tried various methods before deciding on kill Rageface first. If you are just getting started out in Firelands, or looking for a solid easy to use Strategy on the Shannox fight this strategy will attempt to break it down as simple as possible.

Shannox 10 Man Strategy Guide Summary

Our strategy in summary is to 2 tank the fight max ranging Shannox and Riplimb in order to allow sufficient time to scratch their debuff.  We kill Rageface first, then DPSing Shannox down to 38%, switch to kill Riplimb then burn Shannox in the ground in his final phase.

Shannox 10 Man Strategy Guide

Raid Composition

  • 2 Tanks
  • 2-3 Heals
  • 2 DPS with slowing abilities
  • Preferred range on 1st kill, melee will do just fine however

SHANNOX ABILITIES

Immolation Trap– Shannox launches a fiery trap at a random player’s location. The trap arms after 2 seconds, then detonates when either a player or one of Shannox’s pets steps over the trap. Immolation Trap inflicts 71250 to 78750 Fire damage, 19000 to 21000 Fire damage every 3 sec., and increases the target’s damage taken by 40% for 9 sec.

  • Crystal Prison Trap
    – Shannox launches a prison trap at a random player’s location. The trap arms after 2 seconds, then detonates when either a player or one of Shannox’s pets steps over the trap. The Crystal Prison trap encases the target in a block of magma crystal, preventing all movement and any other action. Destroying the crystal prison frees a trapped player.
  • Arcing Slash– Shannox inflicts 125% of normal melee damage in a 120 degree cone up to 10 yards in front of him, and inflicts Jagged Tear on his current target.

    • Jagged Tear– Shannox’s Arcing Slash leaves a Jagged Tear that inflicts 3000 Physical damage every 3 sec. for 30 sec. This effect stacks.
  • Hurl Spear– Shannox hurls his spear at a location near Riplimb. When the spear lands it inflicts 117000 to 123000 Physical damage to all enemies within 3 yards and 46250 to 53750 Fire damage to all enemies within 50 yards. The spear strike also triggers a cascade of molten eruptions around the impact location, inflicting 76000 to 84000 Fire damage to enemies caught in an eruption. Riplimb will then break off from combat, fetch the spear, and return it to Shannox.
  • Frenzy– When the players defeat Riplimb or Rageface, Shannox enters a frenzy. This increases his Physical damage by 30% and attack speed by 30%. This effects stacks twice.
  • Magma Rupture-Once Riplimb has been slain, Shannox drives his spear into the ground instead of hurling it. This attack inflicts 47500 to 52500 Fire damage and increases the Fire damage taken for all players by 40% for 1 min. The spear strike also triggers a cascade of molten eruptions around the impact location, inflicting 76000 to 84000 Fire damage to enemies caught in an eruption.
  • Riplimb– Riplimb will attack the target with the most threat.

    • Limb Rip– Riplimb savagely bites his current target, inflicting 130% of normal melee damage and inflicting Jagged Tear.

      • Jagged Tear– Riplimb’s Limb Rip leaves a Jagged Tear that inflicts 3000 Physical damage every 3 sec. for 30 sec. This effect stacks.
    • Frenzied Devotion– Riplimb enters an unstoppable rage if he witnesses Shannox’s health reach 30%. This effect increases Riplimb’s damage dealt by 400%, attack speed by 200% and movement speed by 100%.
    • Feeding Frenzy– Riplimb’s successful melee attacks increase his physical damage dealt by 5% for 20 sec. This effect stacks.
  • Rageface– Rageface cannot be controlled, and darts about from enemy to enemy, changing targets periodically.

    • Face Rage– Rageface leaps at a random player, stunning and knocking them to the ground. Rageface begins to viciously maul the player, inflicting 8000 Physical damage every 0.5 sec. and the damage dealt increases over time. While Rageface mauls the player, he is 50% more susceptible to critical strikes. Rageface will continue the mauling until his target is dead, or he receives a single attack that deals at least 30000 damage.

    • Frenzied Devotion– Rageface enters an unstoppable rage if he witnesses Shannox’s health reach 30%. This effect increases Riplimb’s damage dealt by 400%, attack speed by 200% and movement speed by 100%.
    • Feeding Frenzy– Rageface’s successful melee attacks increase his physical damage dealt by 5% for 20 sec. This effect stacks.

Shannox 10 Man Strategy Guide Gireland Cataclysm 4.2

Shannox 10 Man Strategy Setup

Shannox and his two dogs Rageface and Riplimb are one of the first 5 bosses in Firelands that may be attempted in any order. The only catch is in order to face Shannox you must clear a significant amount of trash before he will appear. Shannox will appear and circle the center of the large cavern in the beginning of Firelands and you can choose to clear trash in order to combat Shannox and his puppies in any part of the large cavern.

Once you have cleared enough trash to summon Shannox, Riplimb, and Rageface make sure your group is not standing on the main pathway that circles the room in order not to aggro him.

Once you have Shannox pathing the room and a large enough space cleared to do combat with him set up 2 raid markers approximately 60yds apart and then set a 3rd Raid Marker dead in the center of those two. You may need to adjust the two outer markers as if your tanks separate Riplimb and Shannox to far from one another they will both gain a rage debuff that significantly increases their damage and will overtake your tanks, so have your tanks be sure to watch our for it.  Keep the range Buff in mind, and this will set you up for a good explanation for the Shannox fight that is imminent.

TankING Shannox And Riplimb

This strategy approaches Shannox as a 2 Tank fight. One tank on Shannox and the other tank on Riplimb.  It seems neither tanking position is significantly harder than the other one so you can configure your 2 tanks any way you like. Remember Rageface is untankable and you should not attempt to try and have anyone pickup Rageface as he will randomly target players throughout the fight.

The Pull

The pull is done by the Shannox tank, and Riplimb must be picked up by gaining threat as Shannox, Riplimb, and Rageface are all immune to taunts throughout the entire fight.

The pull begins with one tank pulling Shannox and the other Tank should immediately grab threat on Riplimb pulling each to the outside markers opposite of one another. During the pull since the tanks will be moving their targets have DPS hold until the two tanks are set into position to avoid any threat problems in the beginning shaking up the raid.

Shannox Tank

The tank who is on Shannox will have to move periodically to avoid being hit with Shannox’s Immolation Trap or Crystal Prism Trap.  In our experience Shannox likes to drop an Immolation Trap at the feet of his tank and shoot Crystal Prism traps around to the raid.  You will have 2 seconds from the time Shannox places the trap at your feet until it triggers so be sure your tank is aware.  The traps look exactly like hunter traps, with the exception they are much bigger.

The tank on Shannox should also be checking the cast bar for Shannox to perform his Hurl Spear ability.  When he begins casting Hurl Spear be sure to have the Shannox tank announce it so the Riplimb tank may act accordingly. When Shannox hurls his spear Riplimb will fetch the spear and return it to his master. As Riplimb is returning the spear to his master he should attempt to position a trap between  Shannox and Riplimb as the traps also effect both Riplimb and Rageface in this encounter.

When Shannox is brought into Phase 2 after both Riplimb and Rageface are dead and Shannox reaches 30% health you will no longer be able to clear Jagged Tear so be ready to use your cool-downs late in the DPS burn phase where you will be taking massive amounts of damage and need to survive. Shannox will no longer perform the Hurl Spear ability and will now cast Magma Rupture driving his spear into the ground instead of hurling it. If damage is to much, remember you still have a secondary tank and can call for a threat reduction ability as long as the other tank is second on threat because Shannox is untauntable. Tank swapping in Phase 2  realistically should not be a necessity.

Riplimb Tank

The tank who is on Riplimb will tank Riplimb opposite of Shannox moving between the center marker and the outer marker depending on certain abilities. The Riplimb tank will eat most of the major abilities holding threat on Riplimb throughout the first Phase. The only real movement is when Shannox hurls the spear which will always drop somewhere near the proximity of Riplimb he should rush to the center marker in order to avoid the cascade of molten eruptions around the impact location, inflicting 76000 to 84000 Fire damage to anyone hit by it. It is imperative to slow Riplimb while he is fetching the spear in order to clear the stacks of Jagged Tear off both tanks so before the tank moves to the center marker be sure to use your Piercing Howl, Icey Touch, or any other slowing abilities I may be forgetting. Be sure to return to the out marker as soon as possible to increase the time Riplimb is off of the tank.

The only other optional moving the tank needs to perform is trying to

Jagged Tear and Clearing The Tanks

While each tank has his own problems to deal with they will both be gaining stacks of Jagged Tear that inflicts 3000 Physical damage every 3 sec and stacks.  The Shannox tank gains Jagged tear from Shannox’s Arcing Slash which requires Shannox to have his spear, and the Riplimb gains Jagged Tear through Riplimb’s Limb Rip ability and can only be avoided by not being attacked by Riplimb.

The debuff will clear after 30 secs. of not having it cast on the Tank. In order to get each tank cleared on Shannox’s Hurl Spear ability you must keep Riplimb slowed as much as possible in order to keep him from getting the spear back to Shannox, and keep him off of his tank until the Jagged Tear debuff wear’s off of both the Shannox and Riplimb Tank.

Once Riplimb is dead just go into DPS mode and continue the remainder of the fight as a DPS into phase 2. If the damage get s to be too much be prepared to pop threat abilities and take over.  However this should not be necessary.

DPS’ing Rageface, Shannox, and Riplimb

For the DPS portion of this fight you should assign one DPS who has a slowing ability to stay with the Riplimb tank in order to assist with keep him slowed during the Hurl Spear ability in order for the tanks to clear the Jagged Tear debuff.  The remaining DPS classes should be loosely arranged around the center marker (not stacked!) Attempting to kill adds or bosses.  The kill order is as follows:

  • Kill Rageface dead
  • DPS Shannox to 38%
  • Kill Riplimb dead
  • Push Shannox to Phase 2 and kill him dead to

DPS’ing Rageface

Killing Rageface first was the easiest solution for our guild  when we first entered Firelands as he is a hug menace to the raid running around and effectively taking a player out of the fight for a short duration of time with his Face Rage ability that basically Rages all over your face.  In order to deal with Face Rage be on the lookout for a player to be marked with a skull on their head signifying they are the next target of Rage Face’s Face Rage ability.  Be sure to have some sort of rotation of DPS’ers who can commit to performing a large crit of over 30k on Rageface in order to break the ability or the focused player will inevitably over come and likely die if you are not able to hit him for 30K.

After the Face Rage is broken Rageface should simply be dealt with as he runs around the raid.  If you do pickup Rageface he is kite-able and if at all possible attempt to kite him over either an Immolation Trap, or Crystal Prison trap to make downing him easier.  The Molten Trap will deal him significant damage, while the Crystal Prison will entomb him allowing you to DPS freely on him without him dealing any damage to the raid. If you can deal with these things and stay alive Rageface will shortly die and you can move on to Shannox until 38%

DPS’ing Shannox to 38%

Once you have killed Rageface Shannox will gain Frenzy which increases his Physical damage by 30% and attack speed by 30%, but don’t worry it is still completely manageable. All players will move over to DPS Shannox continuing to avoid his Traps until he reaches 38% In which you will switch over to Riplimb.  This portion is basically spanking Shannox down without pushing him past 30% into phase 2.

DPS’ing Riplimb

After Shannox is primed to go into phase 2 at 38% DPS will switch over to Riplimb and kill him as quickly as possible. Riplimb will still be retrieving the Spear of Shannox and everyone should be slowing him as much as possible during the Hurl Spear ability. Additionally during Hurl Spear be sure to avoid the ring of fire on the ground as if you are on top of it when it erupts you will take massive damage.  It is probably safer if you move back to the center marker with the tank during the initial Hurl Spear in order to avoid this devastating ability.  Other than this kill Riplimb and return to Shannox in preparation of the final Phase.

Phase 2 Shannox

The 2nd phase of the fight Shannox will gain an additional stack of Frenzy bring his total Physical damage and Haste buff to 60%.  Shannox will no longer perform the Hurl Spear ability and will now cast Magma Rupture driving his spear into the ground instead of hurling it. He will continue dropping Traps which you should be used to already.  The second Phase is a giant burn phase so smash your buttons harder and use your cool downs with a Blood Lust or Time Warp in this phase to make it go faster and you will see Shannox defeated shortly after.

HEALING SHANNOX

For guilds new to Firelands 3 Healers may be required but this encounter is easily completed with 2 healers only.  Basically there is not much movement required as a healer other than avoiding traps and the fire created by Molten Eruption, or Hurl Spear which even then is not much of a challenge.

Healer Positioning

The Best thing to do is assign one healer to each tank and have them position their selves between the center and outer markers or between the DPS and their respective tank if that makes more sense. If you are bringing a third healer have that healer remain as a floater who is assigned to DPS but assists tank healing if it is required.

Healing Shannox Explained Phase 1

Throughout Phase 1 healers should make sure they are in range of their tank but still close enough to heal the raid.  There should be no reason for the healer to be required to move over to the other healers position to assist. Keep cool downs ready in case the tanks are unable to clear Jagged Tear and you need to be able to push out a bit more heals until the next Hurl Spear.

Healing Shannox Explained Phase 2

In Phase 2  Shannox will no longer perform the Hurl Spear ability and will now cast Magma Rupture driving his spear into the ground instead of hurling it. The spear strike also triggers a cascade of molten eruptions around the impact location which must be avoided by the healers. Contiue Avoiding Traps and be ready to use raid cooldowns in rotation with other healers to lighten the impact of the outgoing damage. and Shannox will die.
