Hi, my name is Belynddora, and I’m a WoW Addict.

I’ve been using for a little over 3 months now. (everyone say “Hi Belynddora”)

Supposedly, the first step to recovery is admitting that you are an addict. So, yes… I’m an addict. But.. right now, I don’t want to quit. I’ve done a fairly good job of keeping it under control until now. Yes, I’m writing a WoW blog. Yes, I talk about it with my friends that play WoW. But, up until last night/today, I managed to keep my sessions down to less than 4 hours or so. (Notice I said.. “Up until last night/today”??)

Last night when I got home from my RL job, I signed on, and started playing character on Draenor. My thought was that I’d try and level Belynddora part Deux as far as I could. I was aiming for 20, and when I started I was 14. That’s not THAT ambitious. Bless and I have been trying to play together for a couple of weeks, and haven’t managed to be online at the same time… so I shot him an email and told him I was on, and that if he got on to “holla at me”. And… he did.

Well, then I got on the Nepentheum Vent, and started talking to all of the guys and gals in the guild (mostly lurking honestly, because I was farming skins in Eversong Woods) and the next thing I know, I’m creating a new character on Silvermoon, and being invited to the guild! (Yep, I’ve been adopted on HordeReview.com AND by Nepentheum! ZOMG! ) So… yet again, I’m starting a new Belynddora Warlock Blood Elf! Only this time, Bless is helping me, and I’ve got a Guild that talks to me, and interacts with me. The experience was so totally different that it was almost like playing a completely different game.

Noobs of the world… I totally recommend finding friends when you are playing. Yes, solo IS better for making money and for gaining exp. BUT… the experience of playing in a group, even if it’s a group of 2, is MUCH better. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve made a habit of talking to people who happen to be doing the same quests as myself, and asking if they’d like to group up, in attempt to socialize… but I’ve been in a total of 3 guilds now, and I don’t know if it is because I didn’t socialize “enough” with them, or if Nepentheum is just that different…(Nepentheum readers right now are saying “DUH Nepentheum is different, we’re the best guild in the world”  LOL but for the sake of equalitarianism, I’ll just say that it’s possible that I didn’t socialize enough) but… last night I had an earful of vets chatting about their noob experiences, and the guild chat talking about their favorite memories of their “noob-ness”, and so MY personal experience last night, was the best to date.

I earned multiple achievements last night, including “Completed 50 Quests”, and in probably 3 hours leveled from one to TEN. I played a total of about 14 or 15 hours… and ended up staying up for 27 hours straight. Here’s what I learned last night:

  • You need to have a REALLY good chair… or a really resilient bum!
  • Just about everyone gets lost in UnderCity. (I’ve actually decided that it’s some sort of Blizzard Conspiracy to trap people.. if you get them lost in the cities, they play longer!)
  • That if you set your focus (click) on another character, and right click them you can select “Follow” and basically will follow them everywhere they go! (this leaves your hands free to chat)
  • That there is yet another WHOLE world after level 80, that I’ll have to learn and prepare for starting at about level 60!
  • The Dungeon Finder tool is way cool, and you get to meet and play with people there from other Realms, and it’s an awesome way to level and get money if you are like me and have more fun playing in a group.
  • Deciding what talents to pick when you are a noob, is really hard… you tend to just pick the stuff that “sounds cool” and it’s not necessarily going to help you in the long run.

Here’s my “Recommendations of the Day” for you fellow noobs…(and if you’re a vet and it helps then even better!)

  • Talk to people around you in the world, you never ever know who they might be! That level 2 Shaman on the same quest as you, might just be an alt, and their main character might be a level 80 priest, and if you are communicating with them, and they like you… they might just help you!
  • You could also find out they are in a guild that’s lots of fun to play in, and if you are polite and such, they might just invite you into that guild too.
  • Ventrillo is a way cool application that allows you to voice chat without slowing down your connection.
  • DON’T ask people for money or materials! That’s the equivalent of standing on the corner with a sign that says “Will work for Food” when all you really want is a hand out so you can buy beer. That’s just RUDE! Make your money, farm your materials… play the game like you’re supposed to.
  • Remember that there are YOUNG people in chat… What if that were your little brother, sister, cousin, son or daughter there,  and some crazy was talking nasty or being completely rude, how would that make you feel? If you MUST talk that way… find a guild that is for only people over the age of 18 or 21, and talk that way with them all you want. (If they will put up with it.)
  • You can find an answer to almost anything you need to know by searching the internet. There are a BILLION websites out there dedicated to World of Warcraft. (just like this one!)

If you have recommendations, or hints… post them here! Spread the word to your friends, I’m ALWAYS looking for new people to play with, and talk to about WoW… after all…

My name is Belynddora, and I’m a WoW addict!

Holy Moly, my addiction facilitator has posted on my column. Did you notice that I sent a shout out to ya on my very first post? LOL Thanks Namzat (aka Tuck)! BTW, Tuck would be a decent name for a toon! Hmmm… maybe fodder for my next column… Names and where they came from?

Very interesting read, to say the least. I, myself, have not yet become the addict I know I can be…..time will change this statement, but until then, I'll hold my breath.

I have been doing the "solo" thing now for about 4 months and, with the exception of the "quest bug", I have had a great time being that loner.

Keep up the writing Bely and I'll keep up the reading.

    I'll look for ya soon.

    Namzat – Tuck :)
