The Guild Master: Forming Your Raid Team
The Guild Master is a series of posts I have decided to write about my experiences as a Guild Master, and Raid Leader in the hopes that it may help some of you guys who are aspiring to run your own PVE progression teams in World of Warcraft. I very much hope you find these informative, share them, and use these to help lead yourself along with your guild to success.
Before I decided to take on the role of Guild Master I had honestly never led a raid over the years I had spent playing World of Warcraft. So before I even really thought about forming a raiding guild I decided to try and lead what is generally known as a Pick Up Group (PUG) in order to get my feet wet. I unfortunately couldn’t raid prime time with my current guild Epitaph and wanted to keep hitting up bosses instead of just staying stale. So I decided to start the ~~Late Night PUG~~ in which I would get on late at night past prime time and advertise in trade chat with;
~~The Late Night PUG~~ LFM Players to do <Boss name> join the late night pug and lets get something done tonight!!
At first things were slow and I had a hard time getting a group together, and the first time I actually did get a group together I was pretty nervous to be in charge. Although I feel I can confidently say I am a very experienced raider this was the first time I had the reins of a full raid group, and to be honest I didn’t know any of them.
I quickly made a policy with myself to not be whatever it is I hate about a raid leader which I think is the best policy to have. Don’t get me wrong you have to be firm as a raid leader and in the days I was running PUG’s I definitely removed a few people from the raid. I sat down and really thought about the raid leader style I wanted to have. If you are thinking of becoming a raid leader you should at the minimal at least think through a similar group of qualities you want to define your raid leading style as well, or even write them down. I personally kept a loose idea in my head which is basically as follows.
- First off I want my Raider’s to have an enjoyable experience
- Never rage at or belittle a player
- Offer constructive criticism not destructive criticism
- Maintain control of the vent traffic
- Do not allow other players to enter the group and ruin it for others
- Push the players to make fast wipe recoveries, and not be ill prepared
- Be the subject matter expert, examine, and understand all aspects of the fight
There are probably way more to add there but at the moment those are things that really stand out to me which I try to focus on while Raid Leading. While I have to admit there have been a few times I failed at these guidelines, I try to reflect after our raid nights even today to see what I could of did better as a leader. If you can manage to make your raids enjoyable people will want to raid with you; its a simple concept.
Before long I was running ~The Late Night PUG~ pretty regularly, and had begun to pick up more and more players who were saving their raid lockouts in order to join my PUG. This obviously gave me a great boost in confidence as well as boosted my popularity on the server as well organized raid leader. After a while a few players who were consistently running min my PUG’s approached me with the suggestion that I begin my own guild, and they would be willing to join. This was very cool as it wasn’t me who was asking them to join a guild they were asking me to start the guild and allow them to be a part of it. So right off the bat I was setup with 6 players to begin with, and we donned the guild tag Noctus Sero of Caelestrasz.
At this point I was well on my way to forming a successful guild and we set a specific raid schedule for the guild, and continued to PUG the remaining players while beginning recruitment online. Before you knew we were a full raid team of successful players off to the races in raiding. This process was very effective for me, and allowed me to get my guild up and running in a pretty streamlined way. I hope this advice will help some of you guys out there wondering how to start up a guild.
